New Build E Learning School Building
City Learning Centre, Edmonton, London
Client London Borough of Enfield
Value £1m
Role: Peter was Project Architect whilst at Enfield Architects between 2000 and 2007
Completion 2004
Work concluded on the new Delta City Learning Centre in Edmonton, Enfield, London, in May 2004 to a brief from the Education Department and the ‘Excellence in Cities’ Initiative.
The purpose of the new building is to provide a new environment that promotes ICT-based learning and explores new ways of teaching. The building offers enhanced ICT-based learning opportunities for schools and evening community groups. Music Technology is also taught, with the centre running it’s own radio station. The glazed cyber café enjoys a view of playing fields, and is used for both, teaching and a ‘drop in area’.
The wider brief was to explore possible changes in the way schools are designed and constructed. The building utilises a raised access floor to allow for flexibility in the services installation and to accommodate any future alterations. Modern office fit-outs were considered in the design stage for comparison. Due to the need for flexibility, there is very little fixed furniture. Instead, as part of the fit out, there are individual desks with PC holders and cable management.
The project was tendered as a Design Build Contract with a very stringent set of Employer’s Requirements and Detail Design Drawings.
